Listening to the Pope

...no, not that Pope, silly! I'm referring to the popular indie comic book illustrator, Paul Pope.

There’s a sort of beautiful ugliness (or, perhaps, ugly beautifulness) to Pope's work that I've always appreciated. And the level of success he's achieved by doing things his own way is pretty admirable. But, I was still presently surprised by how interesting his blog, PulpHope, is. Whether he's giving interviews to Polish magazines, copying articles about the effects of coffee, or just posting current art projects he's working on, Pope seems to be consistently adding something new to his blog on a daily basis. In fact, while it appears he's only been keeping the blog since the beginning of the month, I'm surprised by how much he's already posted. Often adding two or three entries a day.

Which is a lot better than I've been doing maintaining this blog. But, I'm blaming the holiday season. In fact, while out running around in the rain the other day, I stumbled across a book (at Urban Outfitters of all places) that I really need to add to my Christmas list: (un)Fashion.

To quote the book description itself:

From cardboard shoes in Africa to body paint in New Guinea, from chimney sweeps in France to an Indian Elvis, (un)Fashion scans the globe to show how real people dress: at work, on the street, or for ceremonial occasions. With virtually no text, (un)Fashion pokes gentle fun at the elitism of the fashion world, presenting its provocative observations through dynamic images by some of the world's foremost photojournalists.

I was only able to flip through it for a minute or two, but it seems like it would not only be a wonderful coffee-table book, but would also be something that would be endlessly useful when coming up with sci-fi, superhero and other costume ideas in my sketchbook.

Speaking of interesting artistic references, I received Blackstock's Collection: The Drawings of an Autistic Savant for my Birthday over the weekend.

Gregory Blackstock, as the books title points out, is both autistic and an artistic savant. His art manifests itself in the form of detailed illustrated lists of everything from "the garden pest control beetles" (above) to "our states king sized jails." His dedication and skill is staggering in its ambition. And the book does a good job of displaying the breadth of his work.

Finally, I thought I'd point out the Ninja Words online dictionary. As it is subtitled: "A really fast dictionary... fast like a ninja." No longer am I bound to the slow-loading and clunky Dictionary.com. Yay!

Plus, I like to support all things ninja related.

Ninjas in the News

One of the pledges here, at General Admissions, is: We will do we can to cover all important ninja related news. So, it is with much pleasure that I present this story:

Last Ninja: 'Be Able to Kill Your Students'

It details the world's "last ninja," Grand Master Masaaki Hatsumi:
Hatsumi is the only living student of the last "fighting ninja," Toshitsugu Takamatsu, the so-called 33rd Grand Master who was a bodyguard to officials in Japanese-occupied Manchuria before World War II and fought _ and won _ 12 fights to the death. Legend says that during one battle, Takamatsu snatched an eyeball from a would-be Chinese bandit.

I looked up a picture of him, he seems suitably ninja-esque:

NINJA!

In un-ninja news, I've also had a couple other interesting things pointed out to me today. Including 102 Movie You Must See to be Movie Literate, and this thing.

But, who pays the other half?

My brother gave me the heads up on this movie, which is a new classic of Ninja Cinema: A Ninja Pays Half My Rent. Definitely worth watching.

Actually my brother (aka Gypsy Rockstar) has been pointing out a lot of cool stuff to me recently, including this artist: Wesley Burt. Very cool stuff.

In addition, just a quick reminder that this weekend is the Emerald City Comic Con... so be there, or be square. Unless, of course, you're these guys...

...then you're just screwed regardless.

EDIT: While backtracking to find the picture of the Comic Con people, I noticed the responses on this old entry... six responses from "Rod" and one from "Rachel" all telling me that they "stumbled across my blog and really liked it" and suggesting that I check out their blog about hunting supplies. Now, I know those posts are all automated spam, but part of me likes to pretend that posting a picture of fans dressed as superheroes would provoke a veritable army of Rod's to step forward and suggest I buy a rifle.

When ninjas get married...

"high-key-bah!"

Well, today is my last day of work, before I get married this weekend, and then head off to Alaska on my honeymoon.

So, I shall return on the 31st as a very happy, very lucky married man!

Yo Yamabushi

From Wikipedia

Yamabushi were Japanese mountain ascetics and warriors, mostly of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. For the most part solitary, they did form loose confederations, and associations with certain temples, and also participated in battles and skirmishes alongside samurai and sohei on occasion.

Yeah, these guys are pretty awesome. Ninjas are officially out, yamabushi are in. I mean, just look at that guy. He's got the headgear. He's got the sword. He's got the spear thing. He's got the sandals. And, he's got the "you're ass is mine" point down. Ya, yamabushi.
